Every company ranked on this page serves Pennsylvania and the surrounding area, including Philadelphia, Pittsburgh. Open any listing for its address, phone number and service area, then call the two or three closest to you. Distance is worth checking yourself: the nearest veterinarian is not automatically the best one, so this page ranks on rating and review volume first and leaves proximity to you.

After-hours availability is not part of a Google rating, so this directory cannot verify it for you in advance. A pet that is bleeding, struggling to breathe or has eaten something toxic is the case for calling instead of waiting for morning. Call the top rated veterinarians and animal hospitals on this page and ask two things before you agree to anything: are you dispatching tonight, and what is the after-hours call-out fee. A company that answers both plainly on the phone is usually the one that actually shows up.

Before you pick a vet, ask three things: do they see emergencies and, if not, which 24-hour hospital do they send you to; who answers the phone after hours and on weekends; and how they handle a first visit with a nervous pet. A good clinic tells you plainly when something can wait until morning versus when to come in now, gives you a real estimate before treatment, and takes the time to let an anxious dog or cat settle instead of rushing the exam.
